Filmed in Canterbury, England, Relative Silence (2007) is the graduation film of three students from the University of Kent. Through a series of long takes, with no dialogue and a rich tapestry of sound, it chronicles the deterioration of an intimate relationship between a man and a woman, resulting from a complete breakdown in communication. Technology and the demands of modern life isolate them from one another. Gradually, this sense of alienation grows between them and bubbles to the surface, at which point aspects of their subconscious begin to intrude on the reality of everyday life. As the dark imaginings of his psyche take hold, the man loses his grip and commits a strange and unforgiveable atrocity. Finally, for better or worse, they are forced to confront one another and deal with the consequences of their previous silence.
