I want to be a screenwriter

1. All contestants should register at the competition’s official site: www.showing9.com

2. Upload your treatment to the “Story Submission” column, please choose your story’s corresponding category before submitting for publication. 

3. A link for download is provided at the upper right corner of the column of “News, Films, Screenplay”, click this link to download the “Treatment Submission Form”. Fill out this form with your personal information and story treatment.

4.Attach the finished “Treatment submission Form” in the email and send it to the competition’s official email address: gushi_9@126.com (treatment submission email). Your email should be titled: Nine Minutes Film Entry Story “Name of Story”_Type of story. The email should end with your name and contact information. There are 10 categories of stories:  Ethical, Youth & Romance, Horror & Thriller, Action & Kung Fu, Comedy, Art & Experimental, Children & Fairy Tales, Fantasy & Sci-Fi, Critical Realism, Others. Please specify what category your story best fits into.

Important Notes:

You should submit your story both on the official competition website: www.showing9.com and to the official competition email:gushi_9@126.com, failing to do so will result in your losing the eligibility to take part in the competition. Once the “Treatment Submission Form” is submitted, you will be considered giving authorizations to the competition committee to make revisions and changes to your 

story in order to adapt it into a film. Successful submissions will be confirmed by email. Once your work is published on www.showing9.com, it will not be able to withdraw from the website. How we choose qualifying screenplays:

The Judges’ Committee will choose 40 qualifying Submissions from the “Story” Category and initiate film adaption projects accordingly. The committee will also choose 15 qualifying submissions from the original and adapted screenplay category. There will be 3 winners out of these categories to receive awards in best screenplays.

The Judges’ Committee is comprised of industrial professionals, renowned screenwriters, producers and novelists. We will post the list of judges on the official website shortly.

Awards:

1st prize in screenplay: 1 screenplay, cash prize ￥20000.

2nd prize in screenplay: 1 screenplay, cash prize ￥10000.

3rd prize in screenplay: 1 screenplay, cash prize ￥5000.

These 3 prizes in screenplay will be chosen from all screenplays that were qualified and filmed. They will be presented to the winners at the awards ceremony.

四、Copyrights ownerships of Treatments, Adapted Screenplays and Original Screenplays 

1.Each individual contestant must guarantee the authenticity of his/her personal information; each submitted work must be the original work of the person who submits the entry. In the case that the submitted entry is not the original work of the submitting person, or the submitted entry being an adaption from other authors’ works, a full written authorization from the original author is required in order for the submitted story to be considered a valid submission. Dishonesty in the ownership and copyrights of the submitted entries are strictly prohibited, contestants who violates these rules will be disqualified immediately.

2.Once a story treatment is submitted, the author retains his/her rights of authorship, and is considered to have given authorization to the competition committee the rights to change, make adaptions and re-create base on the submitted treatment in any means the committee sees fit. These actions include revising the body of the treatment, or having a third party making adaptions from the treatment in order to create a complete screenplay. 

Once a screenplay is submitted, the author retains his/her rights of authorship, and is considered to have given authorization to the competition committee the rights to change and re-create base on the submitted screenplay in any means the committee sees fit. These actions include revising the body of the screenplay and changing details in the screenplay in order to meet the production requirements.

3.The length of the screenplays must meet the runtime requirements of the competition (10-20 minutes). The author shall also research the culture, history, geography and customs of the shooting location in order to make a proper screenplay, which fits well into the shooting location and is free of production obstacles.

4.The contents of the productions should strictly obey to the correspondent rules and regulations published by the Chinese government. Contents that are anti-society, anti-humanity, anti-communist party, violent, pornographic, pervasive and vulgar are strictly prohibited.

5.All contestants have the adaption rights to the screenplay, under the condition that the original works’ values, meaning, points of views and other virtues are being fully respected.

6.Qualified authors in the categories of treatments and screenplays will sign copyright transfer agreements with the committee of the Nine Minutes Film Competition, meaning the committee of the Nine Minutes Film Competition will be authorized to make the qualified treatments and screenplays into films and other audio-visual products, the committee will also have the rights to broadcast, distribute, produce and sell all derivative products. Authors of qualified treatments retain the rights of authorship. Authors of qualified screenplays retain the authorship of the adapted Nine Minutes Film screenplays.

7.Once the qualifying list of treatments and screenplays is published on the official competition website, the authors will not be able to withdraw or withhold the shooting transfer rights of the treatments and screenplays.
